MDC Intelligent Stirrups
An adjustable top and ergonomic benefits of the hinged design in the MDC Intelligent Stirrups have people like US Dressage notables Debbie McDonald and Steffen Peters along with Showjumping star Beezie Madden and Natural Horsemanship Guru Linda Parelli raving about the product.
Linda says “"I love them. They fit perfectly with my concept of riding with "Fluidity" allowing riders to truly mould their legs around their horse and not have the stirrups interfere."
A number of leading Australian riders are already MDC converts.
The top of the stirrup, through which the stirrup leather threads, clicks and adjusts to three settings – traditional, 45 degrees or 90 degrees. The stirrup design aims to remove pressure of the twist of the stirrup leather against the shin to allow the rider to settle the lower calf and ankle and find the most natural, comfortable leg position.
When set at a 90º angle to the horse, the stirrup leather sits flat against the saddle making it easier for the foot to find the stirrup in the mounting process as it is already hanging in an accessible position on the off-side, as well as being easily regained if lost as the stirrup is already ‘open’ to the foot.
MDC have found that the 45 degree setting seems the one most preferred by Eventers and Showjumpers while the Dressage, Endurance and Trail riders mostly select the 90 degree angle.
The stirrup does not re-adjust during riding as the mechanism requires positive pressure from above and below to turn. With only the stirrup leather above the iron, there is no focus point to apply pressure to allow the stirrup to turn.
With the weight out of the stirrup, it clicks back into the traditional position for easy ‘run-up’.
MDC Intelligent Stirrups are available in two styles – the MDC Comfort with the fixed foot plate and the MDC Ultimate with the rubber sided hinged foot plate. This ergonomic feature, claim the manufacturers, releases pressure on the ankles, knees, hips and back by matching your body’s specific needs and promotes a greater harmony with the rider’s body alignment.
The hinges give the foot plate the ability to angle naturally to that which suits the rider softening the impact of fixed angles on rider’s joints.
MDC recommend a new pair of leathers when fitting your MDC stirrups – old leathers will have an established ‘twist’ in them while new ones will lie flat as intended.
MDC Comfort Stirrups® come in sizes 4 ¼", 4 ½" and 4 ¾" while the Ultimate takes into account the rubber coverings so are produced in true sizes of 4 ¼", 4 ½", 4 ¾" and 5".
Top Australian riders are also riding in and enjoying the benefits of the MDC Intelligent Stirrups. Kate Taylor-Wheat, Lesley Anne Taylor, Nicholas Fyffe and Roger Fitzhardinge to name a few! Kate says of the stirrups: "I found the MDC Intelligent Stirrups fantastic from the first day I rode in them! Since using the stirrups, I have had no pain in my ankle that I injured two years ago; I highly recommend them."
